Year 1

A brief introduction to your program.

Aussie Readers Year 1 builds on the foundations laid in the Kindergarten course. It begins with revising previously taught sounds, letters, tricky words and sentence structure. Then, more complex code is clearly introduced and modelled, with ample opportunities for guided and independent practise, to enhance your child’s reading, spelling and writing abilities. During Year 1, children will learn about nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions and time connectives. Sentence structure will be further developed to include writing more comprehensive simple and compound sentences, and complex sentences will be explored. Children learn about different text genres and the features of each. They compose a range of texts, including poetry, descriptions, narratives, summaries, information reports and persuasive arguments. Handwriting remains an important focus as children practise writing letters with consistent size and formation. During Term 4, children are introduced to basic typing skills.

Storybook lessons continue in Year 1, where texts will provide opportunities to develop rich vocabulary, comprehension and purposeful application for writing.

Aussie Readers Year 1 is designed to be easy for parents and carers to use. The course covers all areas of the Australian curriculum for the second year of schooling, and includes all learning resources. Whether you are a first-time home schooler, or you’ve been doing it for years, you can rest assured that your child is receiving an excellent education in literacy.

Why Choose Aussie Readers?

I am a qualified K-6 teacher, and have implemented this approach to teaching reading in the classroom over nine years. This has given me time to analyse what works well and to create a highly effective series of learning experiences. I know this approach works because the majority of the students I have taught have ended the year ‘Well Above’ expected outcomes. How was this measured? I used the internationally recognised reading assessment, DIBELS. You can find out more about this assessment here: https://dibels.uoregon.edu/dibels8
