Kindergarten

The Kindergarten Year is the first year of compulsory schooling in New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory. It is equivalent to Preparatory or Prep (Queensland, Victoria and Tasmania), Reception (South Australia), Pre-Primary (Western Australia), and Transition (Northern Territory).

A brief introduction to your program.

Aussie Readers Kindergarten course begins with four weeks of enjoyable lessons focused on developing pre-reading phonological awareness skills, and easing your child into learning routines in a positive manner. Then, your child will begin their journey of learning to read, comprehend, spell and write.

All sounds are introduced with explicit instructions on how to articulate each sound. Next, your child will listen for and learn to identify the location of each sound in words confidently. After that, the letter representation for each sound is introduced (first, lower-case and then upper-case). Finally, letter names and correct handwriting formation instructions are taught.

Animated video lessons model how to blend sounds to read words, and segment words into sounds to spell them. All skills are thoroughly modelled and children are supported in practising these skills throughout the program. As the year progresses, lessons teach fluency, grammar, sentence structure and writing. A complimentary workbook allows children to independently practise newly learned skills after each video lesson.

The fifth lesson of each week, is a storybook lesson. A variety of engaging quality texts have been chosen for enjoyment and to encourage a love of reading. During these lessons, children will practise comprehension skills and be exposed to rich vocabulary.

Aussie Readers Kindergarten is designed to be easy for parents and carers to use. The course covers all areas of the Australian curriculum for the first year of schooling, and includes all learning resources. Whether you are a first-time home schooler, or you’ve been doing it for years, you can rest assured that your child is receiving an excellent education in literacy.

Why Choose Aussie Readers?

I am a qualified K-6 teacher, and have implemented this approach to teaching reading in the classroom over the past nine years. This has given me time to analyse what works well and to create a highly effective series of learning experiences. I know this approach works because the majority of the students I have taught have ended the year ‘Well Above’ expected outcomes. How was this measured? I used the internationally recognised reading assessment, DIBELS. You can find out more about this assessment here: https://dibels.uoregon.edu/dibels8
