Book Activities

Comprehension

Ask your child what the story was about. Support them in retelling the main events in order.

Word Study

  1. Point out 3 examples of alliteration on the first page.

    a.  jingle, jangle, jungle

    b.  perfect place to play

    c.   four friends found

  2. Invent some titles for each character using alliteration. For example, Marvellous Moose. Other characters include bear, zebra, sheep and lion.

    3.  Discuss and identify rhyming words on 2 chosen pages. Break rhyming words into their onset and rime. Highlight that the rime is the rhyming part.

    4.  Find 3 ‘s’ letters, 3 ‘t’ letters, 3 ‘a’ letters and 3 ‘p’ letters.

Vocabulary

Clap syllables in 3 interesting words. Discuss the meaning of the chosen words. Put the chosen words into oral sentences.

Examples include mane, plain, gnashed, stripes, cheer, bore, fetch, and/or clipped.

Connecting With the Text

Use blocks, craft materials, playdough, or recycled materials to create a warm cosy cave for the bear to sleep.
